The Windrush Jigsaw puzzle is a celebration and acknowledgement of the contributions made by the Windrush generation and its continuation by their descendants to British society.
Caribbean men and women answered the call from ‘Mother England’ and came to help rebuild an economy that had been severely drained by the second world war.
June 22nd 1948 saw the arrival of over 1000 Caribbean men and women on the Empire Windrush which docked at Tilbury Docks, Essex.
Most of the arrivals found jobs in the construction and manufacturing industries and on public transport as train drivers, bus conductors etc.
Additionally, many Caribbean women worked in the newly created NHS as nurses and midwives whilst others found employment in admin or the civil service.
